At Castine Maine

Tuesday, 08 May     Day 5   Daily Log   Voyage #  0107

CAPTAIN'S LOG

What a great sailing day we had....Sunny, not too cool and not too breezy.  Plenty of parents and friends to wish us Bon Voyage.  We even had the annual Adams School in Castine send off from the town dock.  We want to THANK YOU all for coming to see us off!

We left the dock on time with the assist of MMA's Tug "Pentagoet" and the Tug "Fournier Tractor" from Belfast.  This is the first time we have had the good fortune to use the new to Belfast tug which incorporates 3000+ horsepower with azimuthing Z-Drive propellers allowing extreme maneuverability. It is incredible to see a heavy HP tug push a light ship like this around 180 degrees with seemingly little effort.

We proceeded to Turtle Head where we anchored for Port Lifeboat Release test for USCG and also renewed a gasket that was leaking steam.  From there we motored down the bay into increasingly strong Southerly winds.  The pilot was away about 1745 and we took departure at 1815 headed towards the SW tip of Nova Scotia from where we will head directly for the Azores.

Life is good!

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has been asked to grant us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary procedures.
