Gibraltar, day 2 report.....
Started out a bit showery early
this morning but it burned off to be a beautiful day, sunny with a
great breeze but pretty hot where there was no breeze.
We started the day with a fire and
emergency drill and when that happens in port the majority of the
personnel evacuate the ship to the dock area. Only essential
crew and the emergency squad personnel stay aboard. The ship
was cleared in 8 minutes and full accountability for all hand was in
18 minutes. Not too bad for a first port and as always we have
some "lessons learned" which we will incorporate into our
plans in the future.
The shopping and down town area was packed
today and even walking in the pedestrian streets was slow going.
The reason was.....two passenger ships berthed this morning.
The smaller of the two, "Sea Cloud 2" was not a problem with only
about 100 passengers. The other was "Sovereign (Majesty) of the Seas" and she
must have put ashore two thousand persons. Everyone seemed to
be enjoying themselves with a lot of Northern European tourists in
evidence. The shop keepers were certainly pleased as were the
restaurateurs and owners of the sidewalk cafes. By 1600 both ships
had left and things were more back to normal.
Lots of special "Rock Tours" today.
These special tours are by "Taxi" minibus and last about an hour and
a half, starting at the bottom and hitting some of the highlights of
the rock including the vista from the top and the famous Monkey's
den. Sharing the tour with 4 or 5 makes it pretty reasonable.
