Gibraltar to Odessa

Thursday, 24 May     Day 21   Daily Log   Voyage #  0307

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Gibraltar, day 3 report.....

Our host in Gibraltar the Queens Harbour Master (QHM)

This fine gentleman also hosted us in 1999 when visited on that Cruise.

We always get the BEST dock in town, right in front of his Office.

THANK YOU Geoff, from all the STATE OF MAINE students, staff and crew.

Day 3 yesterday was even better than day 2....no fire and emergency drill to start the day, but bright sunshine and nice clear atmosphere all day made for truly spectacular views.  The rock is noted for views towards Spain, into the Med and  across the straits to Morocco with today being spectacular in all directions.  (see photos below)

Many ventured off last night to view the Soccer game between AC Milan and Liverpool.....accordingly everyone that had something RED was wearing it last night.  Kickoff was 2045 local time here so it was about 2230 before it was over.  Unfortunately Liverpool lost, but it was a good game.

Our first port call is complete and other than most spending more than they planned, the word is that they all had a great time AND learned a lot about History and Geography to boot......

We also had the pleasure of hosting Ms. Emily Worth aboard during our stay.  Emily is the daughter of MMA Captain John Worth and hails from Belfast Maine.  She is a Junior at the University of Pennsylvania and is studying this semester in Madrid Spain so she came down to visit with us and see some sights with some of her former Belfast High School  classmates. After four months abroad, I think she was ready for a bit of Maine.

Check out our Question and Answer page.

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which, because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary safety and security procedures.
