Gibraltar to Odessa

Saturday, 26 May     Day 23   Daily Log   Voyage #  0307

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Eastbound in the Med...

So, it is mostly overcast today, although the temperature is not bad,  There is a trough behind us and one passed East of us and we are fortunate to be riding the back side of a ridge of high pressure.

Training is in full swing and we rotated companies today.  Our time is short with only a week for the transit and the unknown is how long the transit through the Turkish Straits will take.  One of the days is the 2nd of our 4 holiday routines.

Traffic is steady and varied and gives everyone an opportunity to see the other ships as they go by.  Of course the 25 knot container ships just blow by us like we are standing still.

Preparations for Odessa are proceeding but I must say the paperwork is overwhelming.  Multiple copies of just about everything and even a lot we don't have because of our Government owned status.

Everyone seems to be catching up on their rest after walking miles in Gibraltar.....

Last clock change tonight.

Enjoying the little guys!

Not sure she is enjoying this little guy!  What do you think?

Each year the tank cleaning company "Butterworth Inc" loans us tank cleaning machines to teach our class.  In addition they supply hoses, fittings and saddles.  This is a wonderful gesture that really benefits the students.

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which, because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary safety and security procedures.
