Gibraltar to Odessa

Sunday, 27 May     Day 24   Daily Log   Voyage #  0307

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Today we are more aware of how challenging life at sea can be.

Captain Wade has taken ill and upon the advice of Dr. Andy Iverson the ship diverted to the nearest port, to provide the captain with additional medical care.

So we proceeded north and at 1118 dropped the anchor in Siracusa, Sicily.

Upon anchoring in the harbor the State Of Maine was met by an Italian medical team. The students and the ship’s crew did a masterful job of transporting Capt. Wade to the waiting boat.

Dr. Iverson went with Capt. Wade to insure that he was properly attended to ashore. We are not certain what his illness is or to what extent he will require treatment. However we are sure that at the time of departure he was in stable condition and is currently receiving the best medical help available.

Chief Mate Brandon McAvoy has assumed command of the State Of Maine for the duration of the cruise and is committed to the safety and well-being of all aboard.

Although the cruise will continue we may be required to stay at anchor for over 24 hours or until a proper medical assessment can be made and that Captain Wade has the support of his family with him.

It has been decided that due to this delay we will omit Odessa from our schedule, and are currently looking into the possibility of an alternative port of call.

We send our prayers to Larry and his family for a full and speedy recovery and support Captain McAvoy in his new role as Master. We are very fortunate to have someone so familiar with the ship and well qualified to step in under these unfortunate circumstances.

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which, because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary safety and security procedures.
