Tuesday, 5 June     Day 33   Daily Log   Voyage #  0307

SHIP'S LOG

Boy did it rain yesterday. We went through a series of line squalls which dumped rain on us throughout the day.

Rain water is not wasted onboard. It provides an excellent time to wash down the decks.

We welcome Doctor Iverson back on board. Although getting him back on board was no easy matter. As he came out to meet us on a launch about 1/2 a mile off shore, there was a fairly brisk wind and moderate sea which made it difficult for the launch to get alongside. After a number of attempts, we were able to get DOC back onboard in one piece.

I am happy to report that even President Tyler can learn new things on a training cruise. Yesterday, he was extended an invitation to join the 2nd class deck students for a confined space entry class. This class includes entering a tank and getting to know first hand how a Butterworth tank cleaning machine works. We all come out of the tanks a little wetter and much wiser.

Today's weather seems to be improving as we head for the Greek Isles. It will be a good day after all for some celestial navigation.

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which, because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary safety and security procedures.
