SHIP'S LOG

As we prepare to leave the Mediterranean Sea tonight, we are starting to feel a little "ocean motion". The Seas and winds have picked up. We are are coming back to the reality of sea life, which means that we should make sure that our gear is stowed for sea. Should things get worse we don't want to have our gear flying all over the place.

This morning 4th class C company learned the basics of entering a confined space and also how to get an injured person out of a space. These are very important lessons to learn on a ship. There is nothing simple about anything we do, and there are many dangers associated with our trade. It is our mission to educate the students on what the dangers are and how to understand and manage the risks onboard a vessel.

The best way to teach something is to walk them through an evolution. So this morning we educated them on the process, and allowed them the opportunity to test a space and finally enter one of our deep cavernous tanks. A place where few people go.

Mother nature allowed the students an extra hour of sleep last night as we start our series of clock changes.

Note that our Longitude shifted from East to West overnight. This is a good sign that we are heading in the right direction.

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which, because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary safety and security procedures.
