SHIP'S LOG

What a great day we had yesterday. There were physical activities happening in every corner of the vessel.

At 1300, the annual heaving line contest took place on the basketball deck. It was won in style by 4th Class Eric Eaton who not only hit the backboard to win, but sank it into the basket. 4th class Matt Picket and Sam Holbrook took second and third place. A clean sweep for the 4th class.

At 1400, the MMA weight lifting club conducted a physical fitness competition, which consisted of 8 activity stations; station 1 required 10 pull-ups, station 2 - 50 sit-ups, station 3 - 50 pull-ups, station 4 - bicycle aerobic leg exercises, station 5 - 50 push-ups, station 6 - 50 over-head presses with 25&30lb. weights, station 7 - squats, station 8 - 10 pull-ups. This competition was organized by the members of the weight lifting club, which is in it's second year of existence at MMA. It has 25 active members. Jack Welsh is the current president. Sean Poulin and Nick Starboard are also active officers in the club.

The winners of this years competition was Sean Poulin and Rashad Newton. Great job; the winning time was 9 min.10 sec.

The finals in the basketball tournament was quite a battle. I'm not sure who's rules they were following, but there was a lot of desire and adrenalin flowing on the basketball court. The competition started at 1800, and it was a battle to the end.

This year's winners were "Slippery When Wet," which consists of Trepp, Farin, Cullen, and Stewart. Great game.

Everyone breathed a sigh of relief when it ended because no one got hurt.

After everything was said and done, the day ended on a high note with another fabulous cookout and a well deserved night of sleep. Thanks to all who participated and helped sponsor the events; it was a great day.

Rockland/Castine  Excursion:

Rockland to Castine the day we arrive back at our home berth (30 June) has been designated as a possible "excursion day".  The U.S. Coast Guard has granted us a permit to take extra persons on board above our vessels certification.  To do this we have to have certain lifesaving procedures and equipment on board.  Accordingly the numbers we can take are strictly limited.  We, of necessity,  have limited our guests to 2 persons per upper class student on cruise (immediate family members only) plus official MMA invitees and crew member guests.  We can not offer more because we do not have the lifesaving capability.  Also this is always a tentative adventure which, because of weather, security, operational difficulties etc. may be cancelled up to the last moment.  The security issue is becoming a big item in how we offer and execute these excursions, so for those who are planning to attend please be patient with the necessary safety and security procedures.
